SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Tuesday, March 22, 2011    6:56 am

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) deals with the enhancement of the ranking of a website by improving on its chances to be picked up by audiences using various keywords when searching on for example Google or Yahoo which are major search engines. The techniques used in SEO are not paid for also called organic and natural SEO methods.

What Are Search Engines?

There are special sites that aid internet users in obtaining information on the World Wide Web. These sites are called search engines.  Crawler- based search engines use spider software to visit the Web and create lists automatically. Examples of such a search engine are Google and Yahoo. Human-powered directories are where the owners of the website submit an editorial about their site information which is then used to categorize or index the site on the engines list. Examples of this are Yahoo Directory and Open Directory Project. There are search engines like MSN that use both crawling and human submissions to create their listings.

When to Use SEO

In order to optimize on a new or redesigned website, it is recommended to use SEO methods or hire an SEO consultant. Some of the steps will include:

  • A critical look on the website structure and content
  • Website development and content management
  • Investigation and development of keywords
  • Online business development
  • High standards on submissions to human-powered search engines
  • Research and analysis on need for paid searches like Ad Text Optimization

Pros of SEO

  • Search Engine Optimization is a free service, unless the web owners pay for an SEO company or consultant.
  • SEO allows the web owner to pick target keywords that will ensure a specific internet audience is directed to the website. This specific audience is what can be translated into orders or sales therefore a tangible return on investment.
  • Increasing the visibility of the website using SEO results in an increase of the number of visitors to the site and ensures the brand is widely known.
  • The internet is in use all over the world, all the time. Unlike the office hours, this means SEO works all day long, and all year round.
  • When a site properly uses SEO it ensures that the site is relevant and  has less clutter and wastage as only the prominent information is maintained in the web content
  • Effective SEO will ensure that the website can work with all browsers in the market

Cons of SEO

  • There is no guaranteed number one ranking when using SEO. If the web owner is looking for such a result, they might spend too much time and money trying to achieve it. Maintaining a stable ranking may also be unachievable.
  • It can take quite some time before a good ranking is achieved after implementation of SEO
  • Any changes to website after SEO may not be picked by the search engines and all the work of SEO will have to start from scratch

The feedback from most users of SEO is that the returns outweigh the cons. With a well managed SEO campaign, a website can achieve all its mission and goals while keeping their brand healthy in an international setting.
