Web search engines provide some of the best and quick ways of finding required information on the Internet. The Web provides a wide variety of search engines and features found on specific websites and giving visitors /the public an avenue to search and get information or resources using specific words or phrases as need be.

Web search engines are designed to help people search for information on the Internet. The results are normally presented as a list which may consist of web pages, photos or information in other forms like MS Office files. These search engines store information about multiple subjects and web pages. A query to the Web search engines can either be a single word or a sentence, and in case the word is not sufficient, then the system prompts you to input other alternative words or more information to get the desired results.

Categories and Types of Search Engines

The Web contains various categories of search engines including – academic, entertainment, business, computing, arts, job search engines, research, recreational, shopping, sports and general search engines etc. Among these categories are search engines like the popular Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo search, Twitter search, Bing,, Refdesk, Digital Librarian, Internet Archive, AltaVista, MSN, eBusiness directory, eHow,, Bing, AOL search, galaxy, Live search, Bloglines,,, Lycos, etc.

Advantages of Search Engines

There are many advantages of using the Web search engines, key among them being, the availability of a variety of sources of information for the same subject, and by use of only one word, phrase or sentence. This variety gives people the leeway to choose which link to use for getting certain information and to compare information from different sources.

The search engines are also quite precise in the information they provide. Search engines like Google and Yahoo allow the user to specify which sources in the Internet to use for the search. On the other hand, search engines within Websites allow one to focus on information that can only be found in the specific website hence affording more precision and time saving.

The search engines also help in organizing the huge amount of information on the Internet, by categorizing into particular interest areas e.g. Law, Science, Geography, Languages, Hotels, Places in the World, Business, Academics, Schools, Colleges, etc.

Disadvantages of Search Engines

The two main disadvantages of search engines are; too many search engine visitors and too many hits /leads even when you type in a specific word or phrase.  The numbers of visits and visitors on the Web search engines continue increasing at a very high rate which also means an increase in spam and nuisance to the users. For the user, it is also a nuisance to get too much information (some unnecessary) when you are looking for very specific information, as this increases time spent looking for one thing.

In conclusion, the Web search engines are very beneficial to all parties concerned as they provide much needed information at the click of a mouse and for free or very minimal charges
